History & Overview
The name Gulmarg means 'Meadow of Flowers' and perfectly describes the breathtaking beauty of this destination. Historically known as Gaurimarg, it was renamed by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak during the 16th century. Gulmarg became particularly popular during the British colonial period when British officers used it as a summer retreat to escape the heat of the plains. The pleasant climate, green landscapes and mountain views made it one of the most loved destinations in Kashmir. In modern times, Gulmarg gained international recognition as a premier skiing and snowboarding destination. The region receives heavy snowfall during winter and attracts adventure enthusiasts from around the world. One of its most famous attractions is the Gulmarg Gondola, which is among the highest cable cars in the world and offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
