History & Overview
Dal Lake has been the heart of Srinagar for centuries and is deeply connected with the history, culture and tourism of Kashmir. Surrounded by the beautiful Zabarwan Mountains, the lake has attracted travelers, poets and rulers from around the world. During the Mughal period, emperors such as Jahangir and Shah Jahan were captivated by the beauty of Kashmir and developed famous Mughal gardens around the lake including Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. These gardens transformed the region into a royal retreat and continue to attract visitors today. During British rule, foreigners were restricted from owning land in Kashmir, which led to the creation of the famous houseboat culture. Elegant wooden houseboats became floating homes and hotels, giving Dal Lake a unique identity. Over time, Dal Lake evolved into the center of Kashmir tourism. Visitors can enjoy Shikara rides through peaceful waters, explore floating vegetable markets, shop for traditional handicrafts and witness unforgettable sunrises and sunsets.
